Les Masques Vénitiens

Three masks to express the joy and mystery of Carnaval in Venice through the light of gold leaf and energetic strokes.

Description

The name of this series signifies "The Venetian Masks", in French. It is inspired by beautiful and mysterious Venetian masks around the time of carnaval in Venice. In all three paintings, one is confronted between the intimacy of a gaze or stare, with the mystery of a mask. The energetic strokes of the background are reminiscent of the joyful atmosphere of carnaval. The gold leaf, applied and then blended in with soft hues, remind one of the old luxuries and charms of Venetian buildings, and brings light to the works. These three paintings, created right after a lockdown, represent the joy of people coming together, while acknowledging the loneliness of a hidden face, much like how our lives were paused during the pandemic.
